Music Gallery at Home

  • Livestreamed Performance (map)

A series sponsored collaboratively by The Music Gallery and the Canadian Music Centre, we launch a new initiative known as “Music Gallery At Home”.

#MGAH consists of Interviews and Performances from the Music Gallery’s universe of artists, thinkers and creatives.

Interviews are in the vein of our ongoing History Series, in which we highlight creative individuals and musical history in Toronto. Online, these will consist of veterans and elders in our community being interviewed in a live stream. These will take place over four consecutive Mondays at 7PM launching April 13.

April 13 – Nilan Perera, in conversation with David Dacks
April 20 – Juliet Palmer, in conversation with Laura Stanley
April 27 – Dr. Trichy Sankaran, in conversation with Suba Sankaran
May 4 - TBD

Performances are built around a commission of “Even a Blind Squirrel Finds a Nut Once in a While”, an instructional piece by Xuan Ye. Adapted from a piece created for an event she couldn’t attend in person, this isn’t simply a score - it’s a website featuring randomized squirrels and headless figures from Ted Talks served up for live streamed interpretation by the following artists:

April 17 - Germaine Liu
April 24 - Naomi McCarroll- Butler
May 1 - Suzanne Kite
May 8 - Slowpitchsound
May 15 - Nick Dourado
May 22 - Charles C. Smith

Each artist will perform their version of the “score” then present a selection of other works to create a livestream lasting approximately 30 minutes. Broadcasts will take place Fridays at 7PM, launching April 17.

Game-piece compositions, telematic music making and graphic/instructional scores have long histories in our community. We hope that by bringing these artistic impulses to live streaming platforms that we can connect with more people, and that we can continue to connect artists to each other who might never otherwise have the chance to work together.

In essence, we hope to keep bringing the spirit of community and experimentation which drives the Music Gallery’s live experiences to the comfort of your home. Please join us!

The whole series will be streamed live via Facebook and archived on both Facebook and YouTube!

This series is free. Please consider supporting the Music Gallery here https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/4336
