Near distant ensemble performs genre-bending music inspired by the work of Margaret Atwood and other prominent Canadian authors and poets. Led by trumpeter/composer Tom Upjohn, the groups’ sound is informed by artists ranging from Igor Stavinsky to Dan Weiss to Sam Amidon and beyond. Comprised of twelve of Canada’s brightest young musicians, the group captivates audiences with a unique blend of spoken word, intricate rhythmic structures, poignant melodies and free improvisation.

Autobahn is an ambitious collective trio of musicians who strive to push past boundaries, blurring the lines between improvised and composed music. Influenced by the sounds of luminaries such as Steve Coleman, Vijay Iyer and Steve Lehman, Autobahn incorporates complex rhythmic structures, soaring melodies and ambient textures to forge their own sound, while captivating audiences with their spontaneous energy.
